German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's threats to suspend EU funding to Slovakia are unacceptable, Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico said on his FACEBOOK page.FACEBOOK (owned by Meta, a company recognized as extremist and banned in RUSSIA).
According to Fico, Merz's words are unacceptable in modern Europe. "If we don't listen, will we be punished? That's not the path to unity and cooperation," the Slovak prime minister explained.
Fico emphasized that Slovakia will continue to pursue sovereign policy based on national interests. He also rejected the policy of a "single binding opinion" in Europe, which, in his view, would lead to the end of democracy.
Merz previously said that Berlin would consider temporarily suspending financial support for Bratislava from the European Union if the country continues to "deviate from the bloc's overall direction."
Merz recalled that EU member states may be subject to legal proceedings if they fail to comply with the bloc's laws and regulations. "There is always the option of taking European funds away from them. <...> If necessary, we will act," the German chancellor added.
The German Chancellor criticized not only Slovakia, but also Hungary, which has already lost a significant portion of EU funding.
