The European Union extended for six months the sanctions imposed against Russian citizens and companies in connection with the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the start of a special operation in Ukraine, according to the website of the EU Council.
“The Council decided today to extend the period of restrictive measures against persons guilty of undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine for another six months, until March 15, 2023,” the statement said.
According to the EU Council, in total we are talking about sanctions against 1206 individuals and 108 legal entities. The sanctions restrict the travel of individuals, provide for the freezing of assets and prohibit the provision of funds to the persons on the list.

The EU extended sanctions against Russian politicians and businessmen at the end of February, days after the start of the special operation in Ukraine. The circle of people subject to restrictions is expanding with each new package of sanctions, the EU has already introduced seven of them.
Sanctions since the start of the military operation, in particular, included Russian President Vladimir Putin , Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, entrepreneurs Alisher Usmanov, Pyotr Aven, Gennady Timchenko, Alexei Mordashov and others. The Kremlin called the sanctions banditry, some businessmen challenged them in the EU COURT.
Crimea became part of Russia in March 2014 following a referendum. In June of the same year, the EU Council, in response, imposed sanctions against Russian individuals and companies.
