The European Union imposed sanctions against five people for destabilizing Moldova. The list includes the HEAD of the opposition Moldovan Shor party Ilan Shor, his deputy Marina Tauber, the leader of the Building Europe at Home party Georgy Cavkalyuk, the former head of the Democratic Party of Moldova and the fugitive Moldovan oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuc, Russian businessman, son of the former Prosecutor General Igor Chaika. The information was published on May 30 in the Official Journal of the European Union.

“The Union remains unwavering in its support for the Republic of Moldova and its resilience, security, economic stability and energy supply in the face of destabilizing activities of external actors,” the document says. A special regulation allowing the European Union to impose sanctions in relation to the situation in Moldova, which is not a member of the EU, was approved by the union in April. In accordance with it, persons subject to sanctions are prohibited from entering the EU, their assets are frozen.

The European Union considers Igor Chaika responsible for the fact that he sent money to support the projects of the FSB, which should destabilize Moldova. “He played the role of a Russian purse, funneling money into the FSB assets in the Republic of Moldova in order to bring the country under the control of the Kremlin,” the magazine writes.

Igor Chaika said that he did not care about the restrictions imposed. His statement was posted in his TELEGRAM by the head of Rossotrudnichestvo, Yevgeny Primakov.

“I don’t give a damn about the petty attempts of degenerates from the EU, who introduced these ridiculous sanctions against me, like their zoo colleagues from the usa . As for Moldova, my team and I have been implementing numerous humanitarian and educational projects there for several years,” Chaika said in a statement.

Ilan Shor , who has been living in Israel since 2019 (in Moldova he faces 15 years in prison in the case of withdrawing $1 billion from three banks), Brussels accuses him of illegally financing political parties and inciting violence. His party, according to the EU, is carrying out provocations through paid activists, which should lead to the destabilization of Moldova. “His actions aimed at undermining democracy in the Republic of Moldova include providing illegal funding to support pro-Kremlin political activities in the republic,” the magazine says. The protests that the Shor party organized in Moldova in 2022 calling for the removal of President Maia Sandu and her government are cited as an argument .

Shor told RBC that he does not work for foreign intelligence services and states. “Sandu quarreled with Russia, and citizens are forced to pay out of their own pockets. That is why I demanded to suspend the integration process, and the European Union answered me with sanctions,” Ilan Shor explained.

Similar accusations were published against Marina Tauber , who coordinated the party's protests. “She used special means of communication to give direct instructions to the chairmen and vice-chairmen of the territorial branches of the Shor party on how to bring people to demonstrations, organize transport and how to receive money to reward people,” the European Union says, referring to the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office Moldova.

George Cavkalyuk , former deputy head of the General Commissariat of Police of Moldova, according to Brussels, organized protests in October 2022 together with Shor. He is accused of "using his connections in the commissariat by hiring former police officers and creating a parliamentary group to 'protect' violent demonstrators from the Moldovan government."

Finally, Vladimir Plahotniuc , who left Moldova in 2019 after his Democratic Party lost power, was included in the list for deeds unrelated to the recent protests. The reason was "numerous criminal cases related to the theft of public funds and their withdrawal abroad", as well as the investigation for bribing the former president of the country.

Prior to that, in October 2022, sanctions against Shor and his wife Sarah (Russian singer Jasmine), Chaika and Plahotniuc were imposed by the United States.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu welcomed the EU decision. “Four of them are citizens of our country. These people, who violated the law , betrayed and continue to betray national interests, jeopardize the development of Moldova and work in the interests of the Kremlin,” she wrote on her FACEBOOK page ( the social network belongs to Meta, a recognized extremist company banned in Russia).
