EU energy ministers at a meeting on November 24 failed to agree on a price ceiling for Russian gas. The next meeting will take place, presumably, on December 13, said Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó, REUTERS reports.

“Today, at the meeting, no decision was made that would meet the common goals of the European Commission, because a significant part of the member states, including us, defended the point of view that it is impossible to take decisions on solidarity measures in the gas market without unlawfully, on our view is to interfere in the work of the gas market,” he said.

The head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry said that the proposals made at the meeting were unsuccessful, as they threatened the energy security of Europe.

Ministers reached an informal agreement on the least contentious elements of a package to combat the energy crisis, Politico clarifies, but failed to agree on a final mechanism. The representatives of Belgium, Spain, Italy, Poland and Greece made it clear that they would not agree to the package as a whole until the mechanism was thoroughly worked out.

The newspaper noted that, according to the EU plan, the restriction comes into force if the price of gas on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange exceeds €275 per 1 MWh for at least two weeks, and the difference with the price of LNG should be more than €58 for at least ten days. The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, advocated for the introduction of marginal prices for Russian gas in September.
