Sports Minister and President of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Mikhail Degtyarev thanked Hungary for blocking EU sanctions against the ROC.

"We thank our Hungarian colleagues for supporting the fundamental values of sport. Budapest consistently defends the principles of the Olympic movement," Degtyarev told Match TV.

The Minister noted that at SPIEF-2024, during a working meeting with Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, he discussed the role of sport in improving international relations. "Budapest is consistent in its plans and adheres to this line. We welcome this approach and will reciprocate," he concluded.

Earlier this week, Hungary's Secretary of State for International Communications and Relations Zoltan Kovacs announced that the country had once again prevented the ROC and two Russian football clubs from being included in the EU sanctions list.

In total, Hungary, according to Kovacs, blocked sanctions against 27 people and organizations, including Patriarch Kirill.

In December, Peter Szijjarto said Hungary had prevented the ROC and two clubs from being included in the EU's 15th sanctions list.
