CNN learned about the timing of US sanctions against Russia because of the Navalny case

US President Joe Biden's administration is preparing to impose sanctions on RUSSIA this week over the poisoning and imprisonment of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, CNN reported, citing two unnamed administration officials.

According to the channel, the imposition of sanctions will take place in agreement with the European Union. However, the sources did not specify who will be included in the sanctions list and what restrictions will be introduced.

As CNN notes, the United States, unlike the EU, did not impose sanctions in connection with the poisoning of Navalny. According to the source, one of the options under discussion is a Biden executive order that would affect not only the Navalny situation, but also a hack attack on government agencies, as well as reports of rewards for the killing of US troops in Afghanistan. Russia denies involvement in all of the above.

In early February, a group of US senators introduced a bill to Congress providing for sanctions against those involved in the poisoning and imprisonment of an opposition leader. Among the possible restrictions in the document are the freezing of assets and the denial of visas. The names and positions of persons who may fall under the restrictions are not named in it. The document also invites the US administration to determine whether the Russian authorities have violated international agreements banning the use of chemical and biological weapons.
