The United States intends to announce sanctions against Nord Stream 2 AG, the operator of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, CNN reports, citing sources, the information was confirmed by a Reuters source. This will be a response to President Vladimir Putin's recognition of the DNR and LNR.
One CNN source called the imposition of sanctions against Nord Stream 2 AG a "death knell" for the project.
The day before, Germany decided to suspend the certification of Nord Stream 2. Chancellor Olaf Scholz said the project is "impossible to certify" yet due to Russia's recent actions in relation to the DNR and LNR and the situation, including the gas pipeline, needs to be reviewed.
CNN recalls that President Joe Biden has previously resisted the imposition of sanctions against Nord Stream 2 AG and its head Matthias Warnig, including in order not to spoil relations with Germany.
