Neither the Central Bank of Uzbekistan nor the country's banks have blocked Gazprombank's UnionPay cards in the country that were experiencing problems, the regulator's press service told RIA Novosti.

Russian state news agencies previously reported that it was no longer possible to withdraw cash from Gazprombank cards at ATMs in Uzbekistan.

"The Central Bank and domestic banks have not blocked UnionPay cards. We believe more detailed information can be obtained from UnionPay representatives," a Central Bank spokesperson told RIA Novosti.

The regulator's press service also told TASS that the termination of service for these cards did not occur at the initiative of the Uzbek side.

Following the military operation in Ukraine and the imposition of sanctions, Gazprombank remained one of the few banks in RUSSIA where individuals could obtain UnionPay cards and use them abroad. However, on November 21, Gazprombank was placed under US Specially Designated Nationals List (SDN) blocking sanctions . Following this, the bank's cards stopped working in Turkey, the UAE, Hungary, Thailand, India, Kazakhstan, Qatar, Vietnam, SOUTH KOREA, Tunisia, Egypt, Argentina, South Africa, Uzbekistan, Greece, CHINA, and Mongolia, TASS reports.

Gazprombank informed its clients yesterday that its cards had been disconnected from the UnionPay payment system network, RBK reported. "As of November 21, Gazprombank cards have been disconnected from the UnionPay payment network. Withdrawals and purchases with these cards are unavailable," the bank's notice to clients stated. Prior to this, the offer to apply for these debit cards had disappeared from the bank's website. Now, clients are being offered Mir cards.
