Brazil has begun the process of introducing retaliatory measures against the United States over 50% tariffs on its steel exports . The decision was approved by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Globo reports. The basis for this action is the Economic Reciprocity Act , which allows Brazil to respond to unilateral trade restrictions imposed by other countries.

The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already sent a notification to the Chamber of Foreign Trade, and an official notification to the American side is planned for Friday. Brazilian authorities have described the dialogue with Washington as one-sided and closed to their arguments.

According to the law, possible retaliatory measures include the imposition of import tariffs on American goods, the suspension of trade concessions, and restrictions on investment and intellectual property. The entire process is expected to take approximately seven months. The Chamber of Foreign Trade is required to assess the situation within 30 days before any specific measures are taken.

The Brazilian government emphasizes that these actions are not intended to escalate the conflict, but to create conditions for resuming negotiations with the United States. At the same time, Brazil has initiated a dispute in the WTO and retained an international law firm to defend its interests.

On July 30, Trump signed an executive order increasing tariffs on Brazilian products to 50%. He also introduced approximately 700 exemptions for strategic industries, including aircraft manufacturing, energy, and some agriculture. An additional 25% tariff was also imposed on India, bringing the overall tariff on goods from there to 50%. The American president also raised the possibility of new restrictions for "a couple of countries," including CHINA .
