The European Union is preparing a 15th package of sanctions against Russia, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said at a press conference in Kiev. His words were quoted by the press service of the European Commission.
“We are preparing the 15th package of sanctions against Russia, and we need to tighten measures to circumvent them, because Russian production is impossible without foreign components, chips and other parts,” he said.
Earlier, Politico, citing diplomatic sources, announced the development of the 15th package of sanctions against Russia in January. According to the publication, the main restrictions will be aimed at the EXPORT of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Politico's interlocutors linked the pause in the discussion of new measures against Moscow to Hungary's presidency of the EU Council. According to one of the sources, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban used this status to "effectively stop the sanctions talks."
Hungary's presidency of the Council of the European Union began on July 1, 2024. The mandate will be taken over by Poland on January 1. EU countries expect Warsaw to "revive sensitive issues" during its presidency, a diplomatic source told Politico.
The 14th package of EU sanctions against Moscow was introduced in June. it included a ban on the transit of Russian LNG through European ports and obliged companies with subsidiaries in third countries to prevent the re-export to Russia of goods that could be used for military purposes.
Moscow considers Western sanctions illegal and demands that they be lifted. Russian President Vladimir Putin called the West's attempts to "exhaust the Russian economy" and "provoke an increase in socio-political tensions within the country" through restrictions unsuccessful.
