Bulgaria will not support EU sanctions against the Russian nuclear industry, said President Rumen Radev, Blitz reports.

“I have repeatedly stated that we cannot accept sanctions in the nuclear energy sector against RUSSIA, because this will directly affect our nuclear energy. <...> If necessary, we will veto,” Radev said.

He noted that European leaders should focus on measures that will lead to a cessation of hostilities in Ukraine. Bulgaria will continue to help the Ukrainians.

Restrictions against the Russian nuclear sector, as REUTERS reported citing sources, may be included in the tenth package of EU sanctions, which is scheduled to be introduced by February 24. The interlocutor of the agency clarified that it could be about restrictions on Rosatom and its leadership.

In the north of Bulgaria, the unfinished Belene nuclear power plant is located, Rosatom was one of the potential investors in the facility. In 2020, the state corporation signed a memorandum of cooperation with Framatome SAS (France) and GE Steam Power ( usa ) on this project. Companies from CHINA and Korea were also named as contenders for the construction .

The HEAD of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, indicated that the planned sanctions would include €10 billion in EXPORT restrictions and that Russia's "war machine" and "propagandists" would be targeted.

BLOOMBERG and Reuters sources also said that the sanctions could include more shutdowns of Russian banks from SWIFT and additional restrictions against individuals and legal entities believed to be involved in the activities of PMC Wagner.
