The European Union has begun discussing new sanctions against Russia, which are expected to be approved by February 24, 2024 , the second anniversary of hostilities in Ukraine , reports BLOOMBERG .
The new package may include expanding sanctions lists, strengthening trade restrictions and measures against possible evasion of sanctions, agency sources familiar with the situation said.
The restrictions were discussed on Wednesday, January 17, at a meeting of EU ambassadors , where they also discussed measures for long-term support for Kiev. The agency notes that reaching an agreement on the 13th round of sanctions by next month will not be easy - the approval of the previous package took weeks, and the agreement was preceded by disagreements within the bloc.
The 12th package included a ban on the import of diamonds, iron, copper and aluminum wire; Brussels has banned exports to Russia of a number of goods that could contribute to "technological improvement" in the defense and security sector, such as lithium batteries and thermostats. In addition, the No Russia rule was introduced for exporters - a mandatory contractual condition that does not allow the re-export of sensitive goods to Russia from other countries.
Sanctions on the first anniversary of the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine were introduced on February 25, 2023.
Russia considers the measures illegal, the Foreign Ministry promised a response to the imposed restrictions. The Kremlin, commenting on the 12th package of EU measures, said that it indicates the exhaustion of areas in which sanctions can be imposed. Moscow will defend its interests, emphasized presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov . Vladimir Putin said that Russia managed to overcome the problems associated with sanctions.
