
The French prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into the acquisition of four villas on the Riviera by the daughter of a member of the Federation Council from the Republic of Dagestan, Suleiman Kerimov, Bloomberg reports, citing sources.
“[The prosecutor’s office dealing with organized crime] is studying the financial flows that allowed 32-year-old Gulnara Kerimova to acquire companies that own four villas on the Cote d’Azur,” the agency’s interlocutors explained.

According to a June report by the Tracfin Intelligence and Countermeasures Authority, Karimova spent €268 million ($279 million) on the deal. Mediapart claims the funds were largely provided by her brother Said.
According to the agency, prosecutors are trying to figure out who the ultimate beneficiary of the purchase is. Four villas on the Riviera are not included in the list of the billionaire's real estate frozen in France.

On November 14, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Treasury imposed sanctions against members of the Kerimov family, including his wife Firuza, daughters Gulnara and Amina, and son Said.
Four French real estate companies, which, according to the agency, belong to Gulnara Kerimova, also fell under the restrictions. These are Service Immobiliere Antibes SAS, Service Immobiliere et Gestion SAS, VH Antibes SAS and Villa Lexa Estates SAS.
Suleiman Kerimov is a senator from Dagestan, according to the results of 2021, he took 16th place in terms of income among members of the upper house of parliament. Forbes estimates the fortune of Kerimov and his family at $4.4 billion. Kerimov has been under US sanctions since 2018. In March 2022, he was on the EU and UK sanctions list.
