US President Joe Biden has instructed his administration to impose sanctions on Nord Stream 2 AG, the operator of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, and company officials, according to the White House website.

“Today, I instructed my administration to impose sanctions on Nord Stream 2 AG and its officials. These steps are another part of our initial tranche of sanctions in response to Russia's actions in Ukraine. As I have made clear, we will not hesitate to take further steps if RUSSIA continues to escalate,” the US President said in a statement.

Biden also stressed that the sanctions were imposed after "close consultations" between the governments of the United States and Germany. He thanked German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for his "close cooperation and unwavering commitment to holding Russia accountable for its actions."

According to him, by recognizing the republics of Donbass, Russian President Vladimir Putin "gave the world an irresistible incentive to abandon Russian gas and switch to other forms of energy."

RBC sent a request to a Gazprom representative and turned to Nord Stream 2 for comment.
