Australia will ban gold imports from RUSSIA and impose sanctions on 16 Russian ministers, Prime Minister Anthony Albaniz said at a press conference in Kyiv, REUTERS reports. The total number of Russians who are under the restrictive measures of Canberra will reach 843.

The visit of the HEAD of the Australian government to Ukraine is the first in relations between the two countries, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said during a press conference. He thanked Australia for "significant assistance, including defense." Albaniz announced the transfer of military equipment to Kyiv, including 20 Bushmaster armored personnel carriers. Zelensky requested the supply of these armored personnel carriers, in April the Australian government agreed to their transfer.

At the end of June, sanctions against Russian gold were imposed by the United States. According to the US Treasury, the decision was made jointly with the UK, Canada and Japan. The ban does not apply to gold mined in Russian deposits, which was exported outside Russia before June 28, 2022, the department explained. Gold is a "major share of exports" that brings Russia "tens of billions of dollars," and the United States and its allies want to cut the income of the Russian authorities, US President Joe Biden explained the decision on sanctions .

According to BLOOMBERG, the European Union is working on sanctions against Russian gold. The head of the European Council, Charles Michel, said before that the EU authorities want to assess whether such a measure would harm the economy of the union itself.

The desire to reduce Russia's income, including from the EXPORT of gold, was mentioned in a joint statement of the G7 countries at the end of June. Commenting on the threat of blocking the export of gold to the West, the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov said that the precious metals market is large and if one of them loses its attractiveness due to illegal actions, there is a “reorientation” to another.

Russia  is one of the largest gold exporters in the world. In 2021, Russian enterprises produced 346.4 tons of gold, most of the production (87%) was exported, which brought in $17.4 billion, follows from the data of the Ministry of Finance and the Federal Customs Service.
