The wife of Russian billionaire Herman Khan, Angelica Khan, on February 20 lost her trial in the High Court of England and Wales over the imposition of British sanctions against her due to the conflict in Ukraine , REUTERS reported .

She claimed that she was not involved in Russian politics and had no influence over the Russian government . In this regard, she insisted that the sanctions against her were illegal. Judge Sarah Cockerill dismissed the complaint in a written ruling.

Khan came under British sanctions in April 2022, a month after the country imposed restrictions on her husband. German Khan resigned from the board of directors of the British investment group LetterOne in early March 2022, when he was not yet subject to sanctions. Restrictions imposed by the EU and Britain include asset freezes and travel bans . After falling under blocking British sanctions, the billionaire resigned from the ownership of Alfa Bank (he had 20.97% of voting shares). CANADA announced sanctions against Khan in April of that year.

Khan is a co-founder (along with another billionaire, Mikhail Fridman) of Alfa Group and a former shareholder of Alfa Bank. According to Russian FORBES as of February 20, he ranks 18th in the ranking of Russian billionaires. According to the publication’s calculations, in 2023 he increased his wealth by 5.1%, to $8.2 billion, among his assets are shares in the German oil and gas company Wintershall DEA, the VEON holding, Dia and X5 Group.

In August 2023, the US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) expanded its sanctions list to include Khan and Friedman.
