French aircraft manufacturer Airbus has urged the West not to impose an embargo on Russian titanium imports, as it could hurt Western industry more but barely affect the Russian economy, REUTERS reports, citing company DIRECTOR Guillaume Faury.

“Extension of sanctions <...> against titanium, which is widely used in the aerospace industry, is inappropriate,” he said.

Faury said that the company has begun searching for alternative sources of this metal, and the group's short- and medium-term needs are covered thanks to the accumulated reserves.

Since the end of February, the European Union has repeatedly expanded and tightened existing sanctions against Russia. On February 26, the EU imposed a ban on the EXPORT to Russia of goods and technologies used in the aviation and space sectors, primarily aircraft and parts for them, as well as a ban on insurance and maintenance of goods related to these industries.

After that, Airbus stopped sending spare parts to Russia and suspended the provision of services to support Russian airlines.

Titanium has not yet come under sanctions restrictions, but on April 11, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said that the EU had already begun developing a sixth package of sanctions against Moscow.
