Vaccination protects against severe illness and death when infected with the Indian strain, the WHO said. In the coming months, this variant will become dominant unless a more competitive mutation appears.
Vaccination prevents severe covid-19 and death from the Indian delta strain of the CORONAVIRUS, Soumya Swaminathan, Chief Scientist at the World HEALTH Organization (WHO), said at a briefing. The event was broadcast on WHO Twitter.
“If you look at the statistics that really concern us, namely the severity of the disease, hospitalizations and deaths [from coronavirus], it is absolutely certain that vaccines prevent the increase in such cases. This is true for the delta option as well,” Swaminathan said.
In turn, WHO expert Maria van Kerkhove added that even in countries with a high level of vaccination, the Indian strain circulates in those communities in which there are fewer vaccinated people and where measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 are not observed.
