Recommendations for the use of a new nasal vaccine against COVID-19 should be given only after the publication of official results of the study and its registration. This was reported to RBC by Sergei Voznesensky, Associate Professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases.

Previously head of the Center Gamalei Alexander Gintsburg said that people vaccinated with the injection vaccine, who will additionally receive the drug in the form of a nasal spray, will not be carriers of COVID-19.

“I am skeptical about this <...> To date, the results of trials of an intranasal vaccine have not yet been published, it has not been registered. Therefore, it is still premature to give such recommendations, ”Voznesensky said.

According to him, only after the publication of the results of the study with clear deadlines and on various population groups, it will be possible to verify the effectiveness of the drug and explore the possibility of revaccination after Sputnik V. “What Mr. Gunzburg says can have justification from a theoretical point of view. But how much it is necessary to go through this procedure for those who have already been vaccinated, given that only 36% of the population has been vaccinated in our country, I can’t say yet, ”the expert added.

An infectious disease specialist, Doctor of Medical Sciences Nikolai Malyshev also told RBC that it is too early to talk about the specific use of a nasal vaccine. “Of course, a person after a routine vaccination is able to transmit the virus to another. As for the intranasal vaccine, when it becomes available, it will be very useful in the prevention of COVID-19. But it’s too early to talk about it,” he said.

Gunzburg allowed "sterile immunity" in those vaccinated against COVID nasally Society

The nasal vaccine is the second component of Sputnik V, sprayed into the nose. Gunzburg previously said the drug would not replace an injectable vaccine, but should be used for additional protection. At the Center. Gamalei expects that both drugs will complement each other.

A day earlier, Gunzburg specified that those vaccinated with the new vaccine would receive additional protection at the level of the nasopharynx, “at the level of the entrance gate” of the coronavirus infection. In such people, apparently, who will be internally vaccinated, sterile immunity will be created, ”he added.

In October, the Ministry of Health allowed the nasal spray to be tested on volunteers during the second phase of testing a new form of the drug. The research will last until December 2023 and will involve 500 volunteers.

On November 21, President Vladimir Putin also expressed his desire to take part in the nasal vaccine trials. Earlier, in the spring of this year, the head of state was vaccinated with two components of Sputnik V, and later announced that he had been revaccinated with Sputnik Light.
