Virologists explain why vaccinated people become infected with COVID-19

The likelihood of contracting CORONAVIRUS after vaccination depends on the immune response of the body, which manifests itself individually, as well as on how well the protocols for storing the vaccine were followed, virologists interviewed by RBC believe.

“It is possible to get sick after vaccination, especially in the current situation, when there are strains with increased contagiousness in the population, for example, British, Indian. But the disease will proceed in a weakened form, and serious consequences will be avoided, ”virologist, professor at Moscow State University, DOCTOR of Biology Alexei Agranovsky told RBC.

According to another expert, HEAD of the Laboratory for Especially Dangerous Infections of the Federal Research Center for Fundamental and Translational Medicine (FRC FTM), professor of virology Alexander Chepurnov, the degree to which the conditions for storing the vaccine are strictly observed during delivery also affects.

“Both the development [of the vaccine itself], and all the procedures that are associated with it, and the cold chain upon delivery – all this can play a role with some punctures. If all this is impeccable, then we still have the factor of the individual characteristics of the immune system, ”Chepurnov stated. According to him, it is also important which vaccine is administered to the patient and what are its real properties.

What coronavirus vaccines are used in the world

The fact that some of those vaccinated against a particular disease become infected with it is a normal phenomenon for any vaccines, Rinat Maksyutov, DIRECTOR of the Vector Center, which developed one of the Russian vaccines EpiVacKorona, said earlier. “After vaccination, there are cases of the disease, as with any other vaccines against the new coronavirus,” he explained.

According to Maksyutov, during clinical trials on volunteers over 60, out of 150 people, 20 fell ill after the first dose. did not have time to form a full-fledged immune response. He also noted that among the population there are always 10% resistant to any vaccines, including those against coronavirus.

At the end of March, the press service of the Moscow social development complex reported that about 1,000 vaccinated residents of the capital became infected with the coronavirus after vaccination. Most of them (76%) carry covid-19 in a mild or asymptomatic form.
