Virologist, DIRECTOR of the US Center for Global Virological Network Konstantin Chumakov said that a nasal vaccine, including against CORONAVIRUS, could potentially be more dangerous for the body than one that is administered intramuscularly. He told about this in an interview with journalist Olga Kopylova on her YouTube channel "Advise, DOCTOR!".
“The nose is very closely connected to the brain by the olfactory nerve, and therefore all the medicines <...> that people are supposed to give through the nose undergo a very large safety assessment. <...> They [nasal vaccines] can be unsafe because the virus or antigen can enter the brain through this nerve. You have to be very careful with this. It's not as easy as it seems," Chumakov explained.
He noted that the vaccine, which is administered intramuscularly, cannot affect any vital organs. “So we protect the central NERVOUS SYSTEM so that there is no neuroeffect?” — said Kopylova. Chumakov confirmed this assumption.
At the same time, the expert emphasized that the idea of creating mucosal (local) immunity with the help of a vaccine is a good one, since the antigen will enter the body “in the right place”, in the right lymph nodes.
Konstantin Chumakov is the son of Mikhail Chumakov, founder and first director of the Institute of Poliomyelitis and Viral Encephalitis of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. Konstantin Chumakov has been living in the usa since the late 1980s. His brother, Petr Chumakov, is a virologist, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
