Japan and Thailand set records for COVID-19 infections.

In Asian countries, the authorities record record rates of incidence of coronavirus. The surge in the pandemic occurred in Japan, Thailand and Tokyo, writes REUTERS.

The sharp increase in infections is primarily due to the spread of the more contagious delta strain of coronavirus, the agency notes.

In Tokyo, where the Olympics are now, a record 4,058 infections have been detected over the past 24 hours. The organizers of the Olympics reported 21 new cases of covid-19 per day. A total of 241 participants fell ill during the Games with COVID-19.

Due to the worsening epidemic situation in Tokyo, the state of emergency was extended until August 31. This regime involves, in particular, a ban on the sale of ALCOHOL in catering establishments and a restriction on the admission of spectators to mass events.

Thailand also reported a record number of new coronavirus cases. The country recorded 18,912 infections per day, bringing the total number of cases to 597,287. The government said delta variant accounts for more than 60% of cases in the country and 80% of cases in Bangkok. The Thai Department of Medical Sciences said there is no evidence of higher mortality due to this strain, but it spreads faster.
