Unvaccinated people, the elderly, and those with underlying medical conditions are most at risk from infection with the omicron strain of CORONAVIRUS. This was stated by the HEAD of the technical group of the division of emergency diseases of the World HEALTH Organization (WHO) Maria van Kerkhove and WHO DIRECTOR of emergencies Mike Ryan, reports CNBC.
Ryan explained that for the unvaccinated, omicron infection poses a "major" threat to health and life. Those who received a dose of the vaccine, he said, tend to have a mild form of covid-19 . “People should really seriously consider getting vaccinated,” he explained.
Kerkhove, in turn, pointed out that, according to WHO, mortality from infection with "omicron" increases with the age of the patient. “We also have data from some countries that show that people with at least one comorbidity are at increased risk of hospitalization and death <...>,” she added.
Ryan recalled that the effects of viral infections often depend on a person's initial health, including how strong their immune system is. For example, diabetes reduces the body's ability to fight off the virus.
