To prevent black mold infection, or mucormycosis, the use of hormonal drugs and antibiotics in the treatment of COVID-19 must be reduced, as well as close monitoring of the sanitization of biomedical equipment. Such recommendations were given by the representative of the World HEALTH Organization (WHO) in RUSSIA, Melita Vujnovic, RIA Novosti reports.
The WHO representative explained that a number of fungal infections found in COVID-19 cases in India are associated with yeast or mold. They are present in the environment, but affect people with weakened immune systems, who have had severe illnesses, or who have taken certain medications.
“WHO recommends minimizing the disproportionate use of corticosteroids and antibiotics for mild to moderate cases,” Vujnovic said.

She added that corticosteroids in severe cases of CORONAVIRUS can save lives, but their widespread use can cause fungal infections.
In addition, the WHO representative recommended more thorough disinfection of biomedical equipment, in particular ventilators.
Earlier, Vujnovic said that an epidemic of “black mold” is unlikely in Russia. At the same time, she did not rule out that in the case of weak immunity, diseases with mucormycosis or other similar diseases will be detected. However, she expressed confidence that the situation is under control of the health system.
