
An unknown infectious disease was discovered in northwestern Tanzania, five infected people died, seven more people showed symptoms of the disease, Arab News reports citing the republic's Ministry of Health.
The ministry clarified that the symptoms of the disease include fever, vomiting, bleeding and kidney failure. The disease has been identified in the northwestern region of Kagera, bordering Uganda.
A rapid response team to combat infectious diseases was sent to the scene, Tanzanian Health Minister Tumaini Nagu said. “Samples were taken from patients and the deceased to determine the source and type of illness,” she said.
According to the British Daily Mail, in July last year, three people with similar symptoms died in Tanzania's southern Lindi region. Later, studies determined that people were sick with leptospirosis, an acute infectious disease caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira. The disease is also accompanied by fever, damage to the liver, kidneys and capillaries.
