First case of omicron infection detected in US

In the United States , the first case of infection with the omicron strain was registered, said the country's chief infectious disease specialist, DIRECTOR of the National Institute of Allergic and Infectious Diseases, Anthony Fauci, CNN reports.

According to Fauci, a new variant of the CORONAVIRUS was discovered in a person who returned from South Africa on November 22. He passed a positive test for covid-19 on November 29. The victim is currently in self-isolation. The people he came into contact with are not infected.

The US chief infectious disease specialist also noted that the sick person had completed a full course of vaccination. He has mild symptoms and is on the mend.

Also Wednesday during a briefing, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said authorities are considering imposing additional restrictions on air travel due to the situation with the omicron strain. According to her, Washington is closely following the development of events and will take certain steps based on an assessment of the current situation.
