For the first time since January, more than 25 thousand cases of COVID-19 were detected in Russia

The last time more than 25 thousand cases were detected on January 2, the number of deaths per day has been above 600 since the end of June

Over the past day, 25,142 new cases of coronavirus infection have been recorded in Russia. This is reported by the operational headquarters to combat the spread of COVID-19 .

This is the maximum number of new cases in 24 hours since January 2, when 26.3 thousand new cases were recorded. In total, 5.61 million people have been infected in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

The leaders in the number of new patients with COVID-19 are still Moscow (7624), Moscow region (2696) and St. Petersburg (1784). They are followed by the following regions:

Nizhny Novgorod region (432); Voronezh region (359); Trans-Baikal Territory (335); Buryatia (334); Crimea (331).

This is less than the data of Rosstat, which only from April last year to April 2021 counted about 270 thousand deaths. The difference is explained by a different calculation method: Rosstat includes in its statistics cases when coronavirus is detected after death, as well as deaths from other diseases that occurred against the background of COVID-19.

Since the beginning of June, the incidence of COVID-19 in the country has almost tripled. Authorities and doctors attributed this to the spread of more aggressive strains, low vaccination rates, and people's neglect of protective measures. In this regard, in a number of regions, mandatory vaccination against coronavirus has been introduced for certain categories of citizens. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin noted on the eve that the vaccination campaign in the city "gained good momentum", more than 2.7 million residents have already received the first dose of the vaccine.
