Russia reports highest number of COVID-19 cases since April

Over the past 24 hours, the operational headquarters has identified 7,523 new cases of coronavirus infection with 106,000 tests, the department said on TELEGRAM. The figure was the highest since April 29, when 7710 cases were detected.

Most cases were detected in Moscow - 2386, St. Petersburg (781), Moscow region (662) and the Leningrad region (212).

757 people were admitted to hospitals, which is 36.9% less compared to July 23. 37 Russians died, 4812 recovered.

The day before, the operational headquarters reported 6,953 cases of the disease, 1,200 hospitalized, 38 dead and 4,803 recovered.

The incidence of coronavirus in Russia has been declining since February and has reached its lowest level since the start of the pandemic in June. On July 1, Rospotrebnadzor lifted all covid restrictions in the country, as the weekly rate has decreased by more than 64 times since winter, and the disease began to proceed in a mild form in the form of acute respiratory infections or asymptomatically.

Rospotrebnadzor said that in Russia there is a growing proportion of new, more contagious variants of the COVID-19 omicron strain, which occur in a mild form. Doctors have identified in Moscow five cases of infection with a new subspecies "centaur" (BA.2.75), which was first discovered in India.

The World HEALTH Organization has called on all countries to return to the mask regime, as well as to start developing new coronavirus vaccines. Roszdravnadzor instructed the regional authorities to resume the work of headquarters for the prevention of COVID-19.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 18.5 million Russians have suffered coronavirus. 382 thousand people died, almost 18 million recovered.
