Four cases of the novel coronavirus have been identified in Russia.

Rospotrebnadzor has recorded four cases of infection with the new NB.1.8.1 CORONAVIRUS variant, agency HEAD Anna Popova reported.

"We've identified it in the Russian Federation; four cases of infection with this new coronavirus variant have been registered. I want to say that this should raise some concerns," TASS quoted her as saying .

The disease progresses in the same way as regular covid-19. Popova clarified that test systems are already detecting infection with this variant. The situation is being monitored by the agency, the head of Rospotrebnadzor assured.

She also cited media reports of a similar pathogen emerging in CHINA, India, and the United States . According to her, NB.1.8.1 was first observed in January 2025.

As of May 16, RUSSIA has recorded its lowest incidence rates in the past two months.COVID-19 cases during the entire pandemic. By the end of the 19th week of 2025, 1,300 cases of the disease had been recorded in the country.

In January 2020, Chinese authorities reported an outbreak of viral pneumonia to the WHO. The first cases were identified in Wuhan. By January 9, China had concluded that the disease was caused by a new coronavirus  , which was later named COVID-19.

The largest wave since the start of the pandemic was the outbreak of the "omicron" strain, which occurred in the fall of 2021 and early 2022. Following "omicron," there were several other spikes in cases, none of which were as widespread. According to official statistics, 144,700 people died from COVID-19 in Russia in 2020, and 465,500 in 2021.
