Russia has developed a version of "Sputnik V" against the "delta" and "omicron"

A new version of the vaccine was developed by the Gamaleya Center, taking into account the characteristics of the strains "delta" and "omicron"

National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology named after N.F. Gamalei has developed a version of the Sputnik V CORONAVIRUS vaccine adapted against the Delta and Omicron strains, according to a statement from the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) received by RBC.

“A new version of the vaccine has been created taking into account the characteristics of the Delta strain and the Omicron strain, which has been widely dominant throughout the world in recent months. The composition of the drug takes into account the L-452-R mutation, which is present in the BA.5 omicron variant, but is absent in the BA.1 variant.

RDIF also noted that the new version of Sputnik V "provides a significant reduction in viral load" in the lungs of animals infected with the BA.5 omicron variant.

At the same time, the effectiveness of the current version of the vaccine against hospitalization against the omicron strain is 97% and 99.4% against critical cases when boosted with Sputnik Light or revaccinated with Sputnik V, the fund added.

Popova predicted an increase in the incidence due to new omicron strains Society

On August 12, the HEAD of the Gamaleya Center Alexander Gintsburg told RBC about the creation of a new subvalent platform Sputnik V against three new types of omicron (BA.1, BA.2, BA.5).

“The platform has been created, now it’s a matter of regulation – it’s not clear how the tests will go. According to the current rules, the tests will take five to six months. But during this time, a new strain will appear, ”said the scientist.
