In Russia, experts have not yet discovered a hybrid of the delta and omicron coronavirus strains, which they called deltacron. This was announced by the head of the scientific group of genetic engineering and biotechnology of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Cherkashina.

“So far, this variant – the deltacron – has not been discovered in Russia,” Cherkashina said (quote from RIA Novosti).

She also pointed out that experts currently have little data on the new variant of COVID-19 to assess its danger. At the same time, the specialist suggested that, in terms of its properties, the “deltacron” would resemble the omicron strain of coronavirus.

A group of Cypriot scientists reported the discovery of a "deltacron" on 8 January. The strain got its name because at the same time it had the same genetic basis with the "delta" and mutations characteristic of the "omicron". Leontios Kostrikis, professor at the University of Cyprus, said that the strain was found in 25 samples.
