Zelensky's office confirmed the completion of the questionnaire for EU accession

Administration of the President of Ukraine

Ukraine has completed the questionnaire required to join the European Union, Deputy HEAD of the Office of the Ukrainian President Igor Zhovkva said on the air of the 1+1 TV channel.

On April 8, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, during her visit to Kyiv, handed over this document to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He promised to complete the questionnaire within a week.

“A week has passed, and today we can state that the document that Ms. Ursula provided has been filled in by the Ukrainian side,” Zhovkva said.

He said that further it is necessary that the European Commission recommend to the Council of the EU to start discussing the issue of launching negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union. To do this, the EC will conduct an analysis on whether "Ukraine fulfills the Copenhagen criteria for membership," Zhovkva said, stressing that without such a recommendation, Ukraine will not enter the European Union.

According to him, Kyiv expects that, based on the information provided to the European Commission, "such a recommendation will be positive, and then the ball is in the hands of the EU member states." The deputy head of the office of the President of Ukraine added that the country hopes to receive the status of a candidate member of the European Union in June.

Ukraine applied for EU membership on 28 February. Von der Leyen, during her visit to Kyiv, spoke about the EU's plans to consider Ukraine's application for membership in the union this summer and carry out the procedure in an accelerated mode.

Prior to this, REUTERS reported that there was no consensus in the EU on the possible membership of Ukraine. At the same time, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said that there was no accelerated process for joining the European Union, and French President Emmanuel Macron doubted that it was possible to open a membership procedure with a country “at war”.

The Kremlin emphasized that the European Union is not a military-political bloc, unlike NATO, so the issue of Ukraine's membership in the EU "lies on a different plane." Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev expressed doubt that Kyiv will join the European Union without NATO membership. “There is one hitch: the experience of recent years with Montenegro and Macedonia shows that entry into the EU occurs only through NATO,” Medvedev said.

Questionnaires required for EU accession were also received by Georgia and Moldova on April 11. The head of the Moldovan Foreign Ministry said that he expects Chisinau to complete the document within a few weeks.
