Nigeria will destroy about 1 million doses of CORONAVIRUS vaccines that have already expired. This was reported by REUTERS with reference to the HEAD of the National Primary HEALTH Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) of the country, Faisal Shuaib.
According to him, Nigeria, in the face of a shortage of drugs for covid-19 , accepted vaccines from donor countries with a shelf life that was close to the maximum. However, there was not enough time to use all the vaccines, so the leftovers will be disposed of, Shuaib explained.
He also clarified that Nigeria would no longer accept vaccines with a short shelf life, citing a decision by a presidential committee.
More than 217,000 cases of COVID-19 infection have been confirmed in Nigeria, with another 2,900 deaths, according to the Hopkins Institute. At the same time, more than 11.8 million doses of coronavirus were administered in the country, 3.8 million people or 1.91% of the population were fully vaccinated.
The expired vaccine situation is not limited to Nigeria. For example, in another West African country, Senegal, 200,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have expired in the past two months, and another 200,000 will expire at the end of this month.
