The Arch of Friendship of Peoples was renamed in Kyiv

Deputies of the Kyiv City Council agreed to rename the Arch of Friendship of Peoples, now it will be called the "Arch of Freedom of the Ukrainian people," Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said on TELEGRAM.

"Friends! Today the Kyiv City Council decided to decommunize the name of the Arch of Friendship of Peoples. Now this is the Arch of Freedom of the Ukrainian people,” he wrote.

In addition, the deputies approved the demolition of more than 40 monuments and other buildings. Klitschko explained this by the "request of the Ukrainian society" for the elimination of "Russia-related" names of objects in the Ukrainian capital.

He noted that now there is a request to remove names associated with RUSSIA from the map of Kyiv, but the authorities also hear criticism of such measures from the people of Kiev. In order not to make hasty decisions, the authorities will involve experts in this process, including from the institutes of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

“New names should live for tens or even hundreds of years. Therefore, the naming process should be fast, but justified,” Klitschko said.

Klitschko himself suggested renaming the arch on April 26. Then he said on Telegram that he had signed a draft resolution with this initiative and was going to hand it over to the deputies in the near future.

Earlier, as Strana.ua wrote, the city authorities dismantled the figures of Russian and Ukrainian workers who stood under the arch.

Arch of Friendship of Peoples - a monument in the Khreshchaty Park in Kyiv. It was opened in 1982, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the formation of the USSR. In 2015, a resident of Kyiv demanded that it be demolished. The City Council Commission on Culture and Tourism found out that the arch is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture. The HEAD of the department, Vyacheslav Kirilenko, said that the ministry was not going to make decisions on this matter. Then he noted that the city administration should decide the fate of the monument.

Since the end of February, monuments to Russian political and cultural figures have been demolished in several Ukrainian cities. So, the authorities of Vinnitsa decided to demolish the monument to the writer Maxim Gorky, and Chernigov - to the poet Alexander Pushkin.
