Germany will depend on Russian gas for at least another two years, says Michael Hüter, director of the Institute for German Economics in Cologne, writes Handelsblatt.
In an interview with Welt, he warned that an embargo on Russian gas would mean "two and a half years of production downtime in central areas, with a corresponding impact on a significant part of the industry." The economist stressed that this will be a more serious crisis than the one that arose due to the pandemic.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at the end of March announced the possibility of overcoming dependence on Russian oil within a year, but, according to him, it will take more time for the country to abandon natural gas. Among the reasons for this, he called the lack of infrastructure in Germany for the supply of other energy sources.
Prior to this, Scholz noted that abandoning dependence on Russian gas would mean increased spending in the energy sector. The chancellor spoke out against a drastic embargo on Russian energy supplies.
Germany plans to halve Russian oil imports by summer Politics
The memorandum of the Vice-Chancellor and Minister of Economics of Germany Robert Habek said that Berlin expects to achieve almost complete independence from Russian fuel by the summer of 2024: in this case, Russia's share will be 10% of the total supply (now it is 40%).
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said on March 27 that European countries would be able to refuse gas supplies from RUSSIA within two years.
