Disulfiram, a drug for the treatment of ALCOHOL dependence, can be effective against CORONAVIRUS, writes Izvestia, citing Stanislav Ostavnov, HEAD of the laboratory for analyzing population HEALTH indicators and digitalization of healthcare at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.
According to him, the benefits of using disulfiram in the fight against covid-19 were justified by modeling in the first months of the pandemic in RUSSIA.
“It was assumed that the drug binds to one of the proteins of the coronavirus (the main protease) and disrupts its work. In addition, it was assumed that there was an additional mechanism of work, which is to counteract the decrease in the amount of glutathione, an important antioxidant, the lack of which in the body during COVID-19 does not bode well, ”the specialist explained.
