The creation of a new strain of the virus by biohackers is theoretically possible, says virologist, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vitaly Zverev. At the same time, such developments are not carried out “on the knee”, skills are needed for this.

Zverev himself believes that the omicron strain was not created artificially.
Virologist, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Pyotr Chumakov believes that if the omicron strain of coronavirus was created by a biohacker, then he “did a good job.”
“Because everything we see now, there are no very serious cases [of covid-19 after infection with omicron] yet and most likely there won’t be. It seems that there is nothing so completely terrible, ”the scientist explained, noting that the new strain still increases the burden on medicine.
He described biohackers as people who "own some kind of technology, at their own peril and risk and in their own mind, do some things that can have a huge impact on everyone." According to the expert, the activity of biohackers is a problem, but restrictions on their research will slow down scientific progress.
