Scientists have found that the highest level of antibodies is formed in people who first had COVID-19 and then were vaccinated. This is stated in the message of the candidate of biological sciences, junior researcher at the laboratory of repair enzymes of the Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Anna Timofeeva, which was published in the publication of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences "Science in Siberia".
According to her, from January to April, most of the institute's employees were vaccinated against CORONAVIRUS with the Sputnik V drug. In May, their blood was taken for analysis for antibodies to the coronavirus.
All employees undergoing the study were divided into four groups:
1. recovered from COVID-19 and then vaccinated
2. not ill, vaccinated
3. recovered from COVID-19, but not vaccinated
4. not vaccinated and not ill (among them there may be asymptomatic cases)
According to the data on the website of the Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine of the SB RAS, as of February 25, 419 people worked in the institution, that is, more than 209 people participated in the study.
As a result, people from the first group (those who recovered from COVID-19 and then received the vaccine) had the highest number of antibodies to the virus. “This may be due to the fact that after the illness, the human body is already familiar with viral proteins and the immune system gives a more powerful response,” Timofeeva explains.
The Kremlin called the inevitable revaccination against coronavirus Society
At the same time, in people from the second group, that is, who were not sick, but were vaccinated, the level of antibodies turned out to be higher than in those who had the disease but did not receive the vaccine. Commenting on this pattern, Timofeeva notes that among the latter there are those who had a mild or moderate disease. She recalled that there is evidence in the literature that people with a more severe course of the disease form more antibodies, the level of which decreases more slowly.
“To achieve their [antibodies] high titer (in case COVID-19 was asymptomatic or mild.) can be vaccinated (that is, move from group 3 to group 1). Previously transferred COVID-19 does not exclude the possibility of vaccination and will provide a more powerful immune response - and therefore a higher titer of protective antibodies, ”Timofeeva concluded.
Virologist compared immunity against COVID-19 after vaccination and illness
The fact that vaccination provides a higher immune response of the body than the disease was confirmed in December by a virologist at the Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology named after V.I. N.F. Gamalei Alexander Butenko. “There is such an effect as immunological memory - a meeting with a similar pathogen leads to the rapid development of high levels of antibodies, a protective effect is created,” he explained.
At the end of May, Rospotrebnadzor advised those who had recovered from COVID-19 to be vaccinated a few months after recovery. They explained that it is not yet known how well it works and how long natural immunity to COVID-19 lasts. The department noted that vaccines provide higher protection.
