Nine Russians who returned from South Africa tested positive for the coronavirus and were hospitalized, Rospotrebnadzor said. What strain these people were infected with is still unknown.

“Among those who arrived from South Africa, a positive PCR test for coronavirus has already been detected in nine Russian citizens who were previously placed in the observatory. All of them have been hospitalized and are under medical supervision. The strain identity of the coronavirus is being established, ”the message says.

On December 3, Rospotrebnadzor also reported two cases of coronavirus infection among passengers who flew from South Africa to Russia on a private flight. Rospotrebnadzor did not tell which airport passengers from South Africa flew to and how many people were on board.

In November, British scientists reported the discovery in South Africa and Botswana of a new strain of the omicron coronavirus. Later, cases of this strain were also detected in other countries, in particular in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, the USA and the UK.
