The Golovinsky Court of Moscow has seized the property of Pavel Veshkin, deputy head of the S.M. Kirov Military Medical Academy, because it found that it was acquired through criminal means. This was reported by TASS, citing case materials.
Earlier, Veshkin, who was arrested in January, was charged with receiving a large bribe (Part 6, Article 290 of the Criminal Code).
"The court has seized the defendant's property for the period of the trial, citing that it was obtained with money obtained through criminal means," one of the case documents says. The property seizure period is set until March 9.
In addition, the materials state that the seized property includes Veshkin's wife's bank accounts, as well as apartments registered to his mother-in-law. At the same time, the accused himself, during the court hearing, demanded that security measures not be imposed on the property of these people, noting that it was acquired legally.
As Kommersant wrote, citing case materials, Veshkin is suspected of participating in a group that was engaged in theft of budget funds during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, in early 2022, when the "omicron" strain of coronavirus spread in Russia, the group members, according to investigators, approached the Main Military Medical Directorate of the Ministry of Defense with a proposal to urgently allocate funds for the purchase of various equipment, including ventilators, as well as medicines. The funds were provided and used to conclude contracts with companies controlled by the organizers of the scheme, and at an inflated price. The damage, according to the newspaper, was estimated at 40 million rubles.
As TASS notes, in addition to Veshkin, several military personnel and civilians are also involved in the case. In his post, Veshkin dealt with contract service issues. If found guilty, he faces up to 15 years in prison, the agency specifies.
