According to the publication, Germany wants to block the British from entering the EU, regardless of whether tourists have been vaccinated against covid-19. Merkel's proposal will be discussed by high-ranking European officials in the anti-crisis council IPCR.

According to The Times, Greece, Spain, Cyprus, Malta and Portugal will oppose the German initiative, while French President Emmanuel Macron supports mandatory quarantine for unvaccinated travelers.

A British government source told the paper that Merkel appeared "increasingly isolated". Many countries, he said, believe that they should make similar decisions themselves, and not receive them from Berlin.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will meet with Merkel next Friday to try to convince her to change her position, according to The Times.
