More than 100,000 hackers are participating in the cyber war against Russia, according to Sberbank, indicating that they repel DDoS attacks every day. Earlier, the Ministry of Digital Development offered banks assistance in cyber defense.

Several dozens of DDoS attacks are conducted on Sberbank every day as part of the cyber war against Russia, the number of hackers participating in it exceeds 100,000 people, Stanislav Kuznetsov, deputy chairman of the bank's board, told reporters.

“Since the start of the special military operation, Sberbank has been under continuous cyberattacks and regularly registers increased activity of hackers. In this regard, May 9 is no longer singled out,” he said.

About a week ago, on May 6, Sberbank revealed one of the most powerful cyber attacks, continued Kuznetsov. According to him, the attacking traffic was generated by a botnet (computer network infected with malware) from more than 27,000 devices. The power of this cyber attack on the bank reached 400 Gbps.

“The attack was successfully repelled and did not affect the availability of bank resources in any way. We believe that a cyber war has been declared on Russia, in which the number of participants in cyber attacks exceeds 100,000 people,” Kuznetsov summed up.

A day after the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine, the anonymous group Anonymous announced that it was "in a state of cyber war against the Russian government." Hackers claimed responsibility for a DDoS attack on ISP sites, government sites and RT.

In March, the number of DDoS attacks on Russian organizations increased by eight times compared to the same period last year, Kaspersky Lab found out, with the most attacks being made on banks - 35% of the total number of cyber attacks. At the same time, a third of the attacks fell on state bodies, almost every tenth (9%) on educational institutions, and 3% on the media. As specified in Kaspersky Lab, the longest attacks lasted more than six days - 145 hours.

The intensity of attacks on Russian banks was the reason for the offer of assistance to them from the Ministry of Digital Development. In mid-March, the ministry suggested that they send the Central Bank a list of information systems that could potentially become targets for cyberattacks. “The Ministry of Digital Transformation organizes work to filter foreign traffic using technical means to counter threats,” a representative of the department told RBC.

Foreign organizations also reported cyber attacks. For example, the British Foreign Office in mid-March linked the attack on Viasat in Ukraine to Russian hackers, explaining that it "had a wider impact on the entire continent, disrupting wind farms and Internet users in Central Europe."

At that time, the US State Department already said that they supported the Ukrainian side and strengthened the cyber defense of Kiev. In particular, the FBI is engaged in informing Ukrainian colleagues about the "cyber operations of the Russian special services."

The Kremlin denied the accusations. According to the press secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov, the Russian side "unlike many Western countries, including the United States, does not engage in banditry at the state level."
