Ex-President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili bequeathed to bury his heart in Kyiv. The former Georgian leader stated this at a court hearing, in which he took part via video link from the Vivamed private clinic in Tbilisi, where he is undergoing treatment.

Today, a regular meeting of the Tbilisi City Court was held after the petition of Saakashvili's lawyers to postpone the sentence or release the defendant.

Saakashvili is 55 years old. In 2013, his presidential term ended, after which he left Georgia, and in 2015 he received Ukrainian citizenship and lived on its territory. The ex-president secretly returned to Georgia before the municipal elections in 2021, but he was detained and sent to a pre-trial detention center. Several criminal cases were initiated against him, including abuse of office, beating of an ex-deputy and embezzlement of public funds for personal needs.
