Rospotrebnadzor pointed to the risk of COVID infection in the summer due to new strains

The emergence of new variants of the omicron strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in RUSSIA increases the risk of contracting covid-19 in the summer, according to a statement on the website of Rospotrebnadzor. In this regard, the department recommends "not forget about simple precautions."

Rospotrebnadzor recommends avoiding contact with others if you feel unwell, staying at home in case of illness and not self-medicating.

Getting vaccinated, washing your hands with soap, regularly ventilating rooms and wearing a mask in crowded places will help to avoid infection with COVID-19, as well as “reduce the risks of contracting other respiratory diseases”. The latter measure is especially important "for vulnerable categories of the population, which include the elderly and people with chronic diseases," the agency reminds.

The incidence of COVID-19 in the country began to decline in February, and reached its minimum by June. On July 1, Rospotrebnadzor lifted all existing coronavirus restrictions. However, two weeks later, a new surge in the incidence began: if at the beginning of the month about 3 thousand cases of COVID-19 were detected per day, then by the end of the month the incidence increased fourfold, reaching more than 12 thousand new cases per day.

On August 2, Rospotrebnadzor recommended wearing masks to “vulnerable categories” of the population in crowded places and public transport.

Also, the HEAD of the department, Anna Popova, held a conference call with the heads of regional institutions of Rospotrebnadzor, at which she emphasized the need for careful attention to “recommended measures to protect against infection.” The report, published following the meeting, speaks of a more than two-fold increase (by 67.6%) in the incidence of COVID-19 in Russia last week compared to the period of July 18–24. Exceeding the average incidence rate (50.23 per 100 thousand population) was registered in 15 regions. At the same time, the largest number of infections in the last two weeks was caused by subspecies of the omicron strain BA.4 and BA.5, they account for 82.5% of cases.

Over the previous day, 9.5 thousand new cases of the disease were detected in Russia, 1962 people were hospitalized, another 48 people died.
