The restrictions that were previously introduced at various times in the Kaliningrad region were aimed mainly at reducing the number of contacts with the sick and at reducing the number of deaths among patients with coronavirus. Today, the infection proceeds mainly in a mild form, Elena Babur, the chief sanitary doctor for the Kaliningrad region, stated on the air of the Komsomolskaya Pravda-Kaliningrad radio station.

“We saw [previously] a large number of severe forms of the disease, and the healthcare system could not cope with such a large number of people who ended up in infectious beds and, moreover, ended up in intensive care beds,” said the head of the regional department of Rospotrebnadzor.

The Chief Sanitary Doctor also recalled that during the spring lockdown of 2020, collective immunity in the region did not exceed 10%, and the delta strain caused serious lung damage in people and a large number of cases. Now herd immunity in the region is significantly higher than 75%, but even this, according to Babur, is not enough.

“The properties of the coronavirus have changed, it has become more contagious, so there should be more herd immunity. Nevertheless, such strict restrictions are not required in this case.

Because - once again - for the most part, people tolerate omicron easily and do not require any additional care that should be provided to them in a hospital setting. Here, the burden is really significant, colossal on the healthcare system, specifically on outpatient care, but even one call to the doctor is enough for the doctor to advise what needs to be done in order to survive these 7 days and recover from the coronavirus infection,” Elena Babur summed up.
