Reuters reports record number of hospitalized with COVID-19 in the United States

The record was recorded against the background of the spread of the omicron strain. The previous maximum was recorded in January last year.

The number of people hospitalized with coronavirus in the United States reached a record 132,646 on Monday, according to Reuters calculations.

According to the agency, the previous record of 132,051 COVID-19 patients  was set in January last year. CNN, in turn, writes that the maximum of January 2021 was 142 thousand patients.

As noted by Reuters, in recent years, the increase in the number of patients in hospitals has been steadily observed in the states of Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin, as well as in the capital of Washington and belonging to the unincorporated organized territories of the United States Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Over the past three weeks, the recorded number of hospitalized patients has doubled as the omicron strain began to actively spread in the country and became dominant.

Although omicron may cause a less severe course of the disease caused by the coronavirus, its active spread and the increase in the number of infections can overload the health care system, Reuters notes, citing experts. According to the agency, the daily number of infected people on average per week amounted to 704 thousand people.

On January 4, Johns Hopkins University, which maintains statistics on the incidence of the United States and other countries, reported a million infected with coronavirus in the United States per day. WHO recorded a record increase in the country - 871,213 people - on January 9.
