The Prime Minister announced the plans of Moldova to maintain neutrality

Natalia Gavrilitsa said that the neutrality of Moldova is written in its Constitution, in addition, it is supported by citizens. So she responded to the remark that

Moldova plans to maintain its neutral position, this is what the country's population wants, Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilitsa said in an interview with the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

The journalist of the publication made a note that Sweden and Finland decided to join NATO, abandoning neutrality, and pointed out that Moldova also maintains a neutral position.

“Yes, and we want to stay that way. The neutrality of Moldova is enshrined in the Constitution and enjoys broad support from the population,” the Prime Minister commented.

In response to the remark that Chisinau is nevertheless aspiring to the EU (Moldova applied for membership in the union on March 3), Gavrilitsa noted that this step has a “symbolic, but very important meaning” for the country. “We understand that it will be a long way, but we are working hard, for example, on justice reform. Our citizens want to live in a free, democratic and prosperous country,” the prime minister added.

Commenting on the hostilities in Ukraine, Gavrilitsa noted that Chisinau is aware of the risk of an escalation of the situation in the immediate vicinity of the borders or on the territory of Moldova, but so far they consider this a “distant danger.” Moldova in the north, east and south borders on the Ukrainian Chernivtsi, Vinnitsa, Odessa regions.

In early March, Gavrilitsa already said that Moldova did not plan to become a NATO member, pointing to the principle of state neutrality written in the Constitution.
