China's construction of a military base in the Solomon Islands will be a "red line" for Australia, said Prime Minister Scott Morrison, reports ABC.

“We will not have Chinese naval bases in our region on our doorstep. <...> This is a common concern of Australia and regional governments, especially places like Fiji and Papua New Guinea,” the prime minister said.

At the same time, Morrison noted that the Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, Manasseh Sogaware, assured him that there were no plans to build a base. “So he clearly shares our red line,” the Australian politician said.

On March 30, China and the Solomon Islands signed a framework agreement on security cooperation. According to the parties, it is not aimed at any third party and should contribute to the protection and promotion of the interests of the countries of the Pacific island states, to solve "traditional and non-traditional security challenges."

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce warned the Solomon Islands that they were endangering their sovereignty. He said he had no doubts about China 's desire to build a naval base.

The US expressed concern about the treaty and said it could threaten free trade in the Pacific. After consultations with Australia, Japan and New Zealand, they have decided to intensify engagement with allies in the Pacific, a Security Council spokeswoman said.
