Aeroflot has temporarily suspended its membership in the SkyTeam aviation alliance, this decision was made by agreement, both parties are working to minimize the impact of this measure on customers, representatives of the air carrier told RBC.

Aeroflot does not stop using SkyTeam trademarks, products and services, but certain restrictions may apply to the privileges of the alliance on Aeroflot PJSC flights," the company noted.

SkyTeam now unites 18 airlines (Aeroflot was 19th) with more than 1,000 flights to 170 countries. SkyTeam members carry over 676 million passengers annually. Other participants include Czech Airlines, Air France, Saudia, Korean Air, Vietnam Airlines and others.

Since Aeroflot's withdrawal from SkyTeam, not a single Russian airline is represented in global aviation alliances. On April 19, the suspension of membership in OneWorld was reported to RBC in S7. The carrier attributed the decision to a "significant reduction in business interactions" after the restrictions on international air traffic.

S7 also expressed confidence that this decision will not affect a large number of customers due to existing flight restrictions. In November 2020, the air carrier reported that over the ten years of membership in the Oneworld alliance, more than 2 million passengers flew on a single ticket from S7 Airlines and a partner airline from Oneworld.

Aeroflot joined SkyTeam in April 2006. The company's CEO Valery Okulov then said that cooperation only according to the conservative scenario would bring Aeroflot up to $10 million annually.

At the same time, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that the entry of a Russian company into SkyTeam is “a vivid example of how, not with words, but with deeds, it is necessary to strengthen the role of Russia in the modern world.”

“The stronger the position of Russian business in world markets, the more closely it interacts with its partners abroad, the easier it will be for Russia to carry out its foreign policy, since this helps to build trust and resolve the most difficult issues at the political level,” Lavrov explained.
