Rospotrebnadzor is recording a new wave of COVID-19 cases in RUSSIA, the head of the department, Anna Popova, said during the “Government Hour” in the Federation Council, an RBC correspondent reports. Hospitals are already preparing to receive patients.

“If we talk about COVID-19, today we see a second, higher wave than the first, which was in September. The incidence rate is rising. Over the past week, 35–36 thousand cases of COVID-19 infection were registered. This is twice as much as a month ago. Today’s situation is already regarded as the beginning of an epidemic,”
said Anna Popova, adding that the most cases of infection (30%) were recorded in Moscow, the Moscow region and St. Petersburg .

During her speech, Anna Popova emphasized that the regions have already prepared outpatient healthcare and hospitals, and have also stockpiled personal protective equipment.

“Every year, this year, albeit with some peculiarities, in the summer a decree of the chief state sanitary DOCTOR is issued on counteraction and on anti-epidemic measures against influenza and ARVI. This year - plus COVID-19. This is the only resolution this year. it is starting to work, there is a large block addressed to the constituent entities of Russia, and it is described in detail what needs to be done. For example, it is necessary to prepare a medical center, a polyclinic unit, an ambulance unit, evaluate routing, update it, and a hospital base. To date, all these measures have been completed in all regions, the necessary supplies of personal protective equipment and medicines have been formed for patients, if they appear in significant quantities in hospitals. There are enough infectious disease beds today. Subjects that have a large number of beds allow themselves and patients with pneumonia to be hospitalized in specialized and infectious diseases hospitals,” said Anna Popova.

At the same time, answering the question about the need to get vaccinated against COVID-19 now, the head of Rospotrebnadzor said that this is not necessary. You need to be vaccinated when there is a risk to life and HEALTH from this infection, she emphasized. “From today’s CORONAVIRUS virus, the risks for complications significant for the population, for hospitalizations, the risks of death are such that today we do not require and do not propose to be immunized against COVID-19,” Popova noted, adding that if the situation changes in Russia, there are platforms for preparation of vaccines.

Previously, the head of the Center named after. Gamaleya Alexander Ginzburg said that Sputnik V has ceased to protect against new strains of COVID-19. According to him, the original version of Sputnik protected against COVID-19 for the first two years, that is, from the moment of registration, from August 2020 to July 2022. However, starting in mid-summer 2022, when the Omicron 1, 2 and 3 variants of COVID-19 emerged, the vaccine's effectiveness dropped eightfold. When options 4 and 5 appeared, the efficiency dropped by 20 times. The drug is completely powerless against new variants.
